[origin: WO8607342A1] A method for transferring fabric, e.g. knitted fabric, from a stock e.g. a roll, a staple or the like by means of a cloth folding machine in a tension-free condition upon a folding table (12). The purpose of the present invention is to provide a method and a cloth folding machine, which make it possible to effect the tension-free transfer of fabric to a folding table. This task has been solved in that the fabric (20) is fed from the stock via a feed roller (17) and is laid down concurrently with the feed upon a mobile supporting surface (31), which is moved a distance corresponding to the length of the desired piece of fabric. The fabric (20) thus fed is severed, and that the mobile supporting surface (31) during the feed of the piece of fabric lays down the piece of fabric upon the folding table (12) concurrently with the extension of the supporting surface (31) under the piece of fabric successively being reduced until the entire piece of fabric has been transferred to the folding table.
