[origin: EP0266652A1] A cable connector (18) and, if required, partially also the apparatus itself, are provided with an electronic coding (U0, 16, 17, 27) characterising the type of electrode used. A coding reader and comparison unit (3) reads the connector coding and compares it to a nominal value stored in a memory (4).
