Process for the production of vanadium trichloride in aqueous solution, characterized in that electrolytic reduction takes place of a solution containing pentavalent and/or tetravalent vanadium ions in a cell, where the catholyte and anolyte are separated by an anionic membrane and electrolysis is continued until the potential of a platinum electrode immersed in the solution compared with a calomel electrode is between 100 and -200 mV.
