[origin: WO8707415A1] Apparatus (2) for characterising or identifying an article (10) having a magnetic material thereon which stores information relating to the article, the apparatus comprising means (24) for irradiating the article with electromagnetic radiation of a particular spectral characteristic, means (26, 28, 30) for detecting electromagnetic radiation which is emitted by or reflected from the article due to the irradiation thereof by the means for irradiating, means for determining whether or not the detected radiation has prescribed spectral characteristics thereby to detect whether or not the article is genuine, and a magnetic detector means for reading information which is stored on the magnetic material, the means for detecting being arranged to control the magnetic detector means in response to the detection or whether or not the article is genuine. The invention also provides a method for characterising or identifying an article having a magnetic material thereon which stores information relating to the article.

Dispositif (2) permettant de caractériser ou d'identifier un article (10) portant un matériau magnétique sur lequel sont enregistrées des informations relatives à l'article. Le dispositif comprend un organe (24) permettant de soumettre l'article à un rayonnement électromagnétique de caractéristique spectrale particulière, des organes (26, 28, 30) servant à détecter le rayonnement électromagnétique émis ou réfléchi par l'article suite à son irradiation par l'organe (24), un organe permettant de déterminer si le rayonnement détecté présente les caractéristiques spectrales requises afin de déterminer si l'article est authentique, et un organe détecteur magnétique permettant de lire les informations enregistrées sur le matériau magnétique, l'organe de détection commandant le détecteur magnétique en fonction de la détection de l'authenticité de l'article. L'invention se rapporte également à un procédé permettant de caractériser ou d'identifier un article portant un matériau magnétique sur lequel sont enregistrées des informations relatives à l'article.
