Abstract (en)
[origin: EP0273289A2] A method and means for maintaining continuous bit synchronization of data transmitted from a remote unit (114) through a base unit (126) to a landline unit (136) is disclosed. An input data stream (222) at a first bit rate, such as digitized or encrypted speech, is interleaved in a formatter (230) with a plurality of signalling words (234), and transmitted over an RF channel at a second bit rate. The base site decoder (250) recovers the clock of the received data, a reformatter (260) strips off the signalling word, and an elastic buffer (270) modifies the bit rate of the received data and adjusts the recovered clock rate to provide an output data stream (272) which is in bit synchronization with the input data stream and within a predetermined modem specification. The encrypted data is then sent over landlines (132) to a decryption unit (280) which requires bit synchronization.
