[origin: EP0273462A2] An automotive oil cooler (10) used in combination with an oil filter (14). The oil cooler (10) is comprised of a heat exchange element (10) which is constructed of a plurality of heat transmission plates (18). The heat transmission plates (18) are piled up one upon another and fixedly secured by brazing in such a manner as to define oil and water flowing spaces on the opposite sides of each heat transmission plate (18). Oil and water flow through the oil and water flowing spaces, respectively. The heat exchange (10) element is formed with a plurality of oil supply passages (P1, P2) through which oil is supplied to the oil filter (14), an oil inflow passage (P1) communicating with the oil flowing space to receive oil from the oil filter (14), an oil outflow passage (P2) communicating with the oil flowing space to receive oil from the oil flowing space, a water inflow passage (P3) communicating with the water flowing passage, and a water outflow passage (P4) communicating with the water flowing space to receive water from the water flowing space. Additionally, an under cover (54) is fixedly secured to the heat exchange element (10) and formed therein with a plurality of vertically extending partition walls (62 A-E). The partition walls (62 A-E) define an oil supply chamber (66) through which oil is supplied to the oil supply passage (P1) of the heat exchange element (10), an oil discharge chamber through which oil from the oil outflow passage of the heat exchange element (10) is discharged outside of the under cover (54), a water introduction chamber (64) through which water is introduced into the water inflow passage (P3) of the heat exchange element (10), and a water discharge chamber (72) through which water from the water outflow passage (P4) of the heat exchange element (10) is discharged outside of the under cover (54).
