[origin: EP0278808A1] The refuse storage container comprises a compression chamber (1), an ash pan (2) for receiving the refuse, communicating with the compression chamber (1) by means of a loading orifice (3), and a compacting device (4) mounted so as to pivot in the ash pan (2) between a retracted position in which it is distant from the loading orifice (3) and an advanced position in which it advances in the latter. The storage container comprises a second compacting device (16), limiting the height of the loading orifice (3), this second compacting device being displaceable between an advanced position and a retracted position at the same time as the first compacting device (4), but in the opposite direction. The refuse contained in the compression chamber (1) may thus be compressed further, which makes it possible to increase the loading capabilities of the storage container. <IMAGE>
