Sizing agents, in particular surface sizing agents, for paper and paper-like materials contain water-containing solutions of salts of randomly structured copolymers of styrene and maleic acid (anhydride) with maleic acid (anhydride) contents of between about 20 and about 40% by weight and limiting viscosity numbers 2 of between about 0.1 and about 0.6 g/dl measured in DMF, or of partial esters or partial amides of these copolymers. The sizing agents can be used universally as they have an excellent sizing action on papers of very different composition.

Leimungsmittel, insbesondere Oberflächenleimungsmittel, für Papier und papierähnliche Materialien enthalten wasserhaltige Lösungen von Salzen von statistisch aufgebauten Copolymerisaten aus Styrol und Maleinsäure(anhydrid) mit Maleinsäure(anhydrid)-Gehalten zwischen etwa 20 und etwa 40 Gew.-% und Grenzviskositätszahlen η zwischen etwa 0,1 und etwa 0,6 dl/g, gemessen in DMF, oder von partiellen Estern oder partiellen Amiden dieser Copolymerisate. Die Leimungsmittel sind universell einsetzbar, da sie auf Papieren sehr unterschiedlicher Zusammensetzung eine ausgezeichnete Leimungswirkung ergeben.
