[origin: EP0280043A1] Sizing agents, in particular surface sizing agents, for paper and paper-like materials contain water-containing solutions of salts of randomly structured copolymers of styrene and maleic acid (anhydride) with maleic acid (anhydride) contents of between about 20 and about 40% by weight and limiting viscosity numbers 2 of between about 0.1 and about 0.6 g/dl measured in DMF, or of partial esters or partial amides of these copolymers. The sizing agents can be used universally as they have an excellent sizing action on papers of very different composition.
