[origin: EP0281176A1] In a process for preparing workpieces, which have at least partially been machined with metal removal and have surfaces of aluminium and alloys thereof, for subsequent painting, the workpieces are first treated by annealing and/or pickling in an oxidising acidic medium and then coated with a conversion layer. It is particularly advantageous first to pickle the workpieces in a solution containing HNO3+HF and/or HNO3 and subsequently to coat them with a conversion layer by yellow chromation or fluoride-activated zinc manganese phosphating and then to coat them by the electro-dipping process, powder-coating process or high-solids coating process. The process is preferably applicable to the treatment of workpieces having surfaces of alloys of the type AlMg or AlMgMn or of the heat-hardenable type AlMgSi.
