[origin: EP0281861A1] The invention applies to an electronic franking machine using a first set of messages for normal franking operations and a second set of messages for special operations. According to the invention, the first set of messages comprises a "ceiling value exceeded" message, any franking at a value higher than the ceiling value requiring action by the operator (validation), and a "limit value exceeded" message preventing any franking at a higher value; the second set of messages comprises a "change of ceiling value" message and a "change of limit value" message, these two messages enabling the operator to fix the ceiling and limit values separately and, if he desires, to change them by means of the keypad of the machine. <IMAGE>
