This is moved transversely relative to the yarn running direction, sweeps over the work stations (1-8) arranged in a row in the process and is interrupted or weakened by the respective yarn at each work station. The fading of the beam caused thereby is used as a criterion for the presence of the respective yarn. <??>The method allows on-line production and quality monitoring on multi-spindle textile machines, for example ring spinning machines, at a justifiable outlay in terms of cost. <IMAGE>
