[origin: EP0288653A2] In a method for testing the setting behaviour or rate, the penetration depth of a penetration needle (12) applied with preselected force to a sample formed from the mass to be tested is used as a measure of the instantaneous setting condition. In order to obtain precise test results which are directly comparable to one another for different samples and arrive at conclusions about the actual setting behaviour even in relation to the setting rate, samples prepared or obtained under comparable conditions are placed in beaker-type test vessels (8) in the region in which the needle (12) moves and the needle dipping into the test vessel (8) from above is allowed to penetrate spaced perforation points at specified intervals of time. The data relating to the individual penetration depths are recorded, stored as a data profile by means of a computer (17) as a function of the time intervals or perforation points and evaluated. <IMAGE>
