The large size brick (10) is provided on at least one visible face (12) with a pattern of horizontally and vertically extending grooves (14, 16) which simulates the pattern of a facing wall bond made of smaller bricks (18). As a result, it is possible using large size bricks (10) to erect inexpensively a masonry structure which gives the visual impression of a facing masonry structure made from smaller sized bricks. For the manufacture of the large size bricks, the column of clay continuously emerging from an extrusion press is cut into extruded pieces, the length of which corresponds to a multiple of the dimension, measured in the direction of extrusion, of the large size bricks. Continuous transverse grooves (14) are then produced by means of suitable cutting devices by moving a cutting frame transversely to the direction of extrusion and longitudinal grooves (16) are produced by moving a cutting frame in the direction of extrusion. The extruded piece is finally cut by means of a multi-wire cutter into the individual large size bricks. <IMAGE>

Ein Großblockziegel (10) ist an mindestens einer Sichtseite (12) mit einem Raster von horizontal und vertikal verlaufenden Rillen (14, 16) versehen, welches dem Raster eines Sichtmauerverbandes aus kleineren Ziegeln (18) gleicht. Hierdurch läßt sich unter Verwendung von Großblockziegeln (10) in kostengünstiger Weise ein Mauerwerk errichten, das den optischen Eindruck eines aus Ziegeln kleineren Formats errichteten Sichtmauerwerks vermittelt. Zur Herstellung der Großblockziegel wird der kontinuierlich aus einer Strangpresse austretende Tonstrang in Strangstücke geschnitten, deren Länge einem Vielfachen der in Strangrichtung gemessenen Abmessung der Großblockziegel entspricht. Anschließend werden mittels geeigneter Schneideinrichtungen durch Bewegung eines Schneidrahmens quer zur Strangrichtung durchgehende Querrillen (14) und durch Bewegung eines Schneidrahmens in Strangrichtung Längsrillen (16) erzeugt. Schließlich wird das Strangstück mittels eines Mehrdrahtabschneiders in die einzelnen Großblockziegel geschnitten.
