Eine Vorrichtung zum Auf- oder Abwickeln einer Materialbahn mit zwei im Abstand voneinander angeordenten Ständern (1,2), in denen jeweils ein horizontaler, in eine Wickelhülse (9) einfahrbarer Spannkopf (7) drehbar gelagert ist, weist eine Einrichtung (15-17) zum Unterstützen der Rolle (8) während des Auf- oder Abwickelns an der Unterseite auf, die mit der Rolle (8) bewegbar ist. Bei einer bevorzugten Ausführungsform besteht die Unterstützungseinrichtung aus einem in einem höhenverstellbaren Gestell (15) freilaufend gelagerten endlosen Band (17). Mit dieser Vorrichtung lassen sich schwere Rollen (8) auf- oder abwickeln, ohne daß Kreppfalten oder Risse auftreten.
