[origin: EP0293349A1] A device for manufacture of a metal granulate in the form of "needles" by rapid solidification, comprising a rotatable, cylindrical crucible (1) with vertical axis of rotation and small apertures in the wall, and means for supply of melt from above and down into the crucible, wherein a supply tube (2) for the melt is provided vertically above the crucible (1) and can be connected to a furnace. The crucible is fastened to a sleeve (5) which surrounds the supply tube and defines a space around the tube, and the sleeve is journalled for rotation together with the crucible, and means (7,11) are provided for sealing the sleeve (5) against admission of air. Through the means (11) providing sealing at the upper end of the sleeve (5) extends at least one passageway for supply of an inert gas into the space.
