[origin: EP0295319A1] Use of intaglio printing cylinders consisting of a core of a virtually non-deformable material and a detachable multi-layer sleeve secured to the core has shown that they are not able to withstand all the strains of a heavy-duty printing plant and that the special equipment necessary for their treatment is operationally unsatisfactory. The new intaglio printing cylinder is intended to be an improvement with respect to its operational properties and, in particular, to have a longer working life and to be capable of use and operation in conventional solid-metal intaglio printing cylinders. The new intaglio printing cylinder is distinguished by the fact that a number of ribs (41) running essentially in the longitudinal direction of the cylinder (1) are arranged on the outer face of the first, inner layer (4) of the sleeve (3) so as to project outwards. This intaglio printing cylinder possesses improved stability, especially against rotation or displacement within the sleeve in the circumferential direction and, consequently, has a longer working life. A further improvement in its operating properties is achieved by means of a direct electrical connection between the core and the outer copper layer. The new intaglio printing cylinder is particularly suitable as a replacement for the solid-metal printing cylinders still in use today.
