[origin: US4830771A] A process for the preparation of trialkanolamine di(fatty acid) esters in which a trialkanolamine is reacted with a fatty acid in the presence of small amounts of a fatty acid ester. The trialkanolamine fatty acid diesters obtained can be converted into the quaternary ammonium salt by means of standard quaternizing agents, and the resulting products can be employed as fabric conditioners.

Die Veresterung von Trialkanolaminen mit ca. zwei Äquivalenten Fettsäuren bzw. Fettsäuremethylestern führt nach der üblichen Quarternisierung zu Ammoniumverbindungen, deren handelsübliche 85gewichtsprozentige Konzentrate zu Kristallbildung und zum Absitzen neigen. Es wird vorgeschlagen, die Umsetzung des Trialkanolamins mit der Fettsäure in Gegenwart geringer Mengen eines Fettsäureesters durchzuführen. Die erhaltenen Trialkanolaminfettsäuredieester können durch übliche Quarternisierungsmittel in das quarternäre Ammoniumsalz überführt werden und lassen sich als Wäscheweichspülmittel einsetzen.
