Abstract (en)

[origin: EP0298494A2] An active sub-munition part, a flechette warhead and flechettes for this are to be designed to the effect that the active part (90) transportable by means of a carrier (75) on the one hand has as low a weight as possible in the interests of transport over relatively long distances and on the other hand covers a predeterminably large target sector, in which it will be possible still to fight effectively actions against various and also semi-hard- to hard-armoured targets, even when they are in the concealed position of a natural or artificial state of protection. For this purpose, the active part (90) consists of a plurality of sub-munition warheads (51) with flechettes (60) which are first accelerated axially together with the warhead (51) by means of a rocket propulsion unit (70) and set in rotation about the warhead axis (57), whereupon a further acceleration, with the flechettes (60) being ejected from the warhead housing (52), takes place. To achieve an increased secondary effect, the flechettes (60) can have an axial cavity (95) filled with an incendiary compound (94). Flechettes (60) designed for combat against take-off runways or as ground mines have as a penetration brake a rear extension (68) projecting radially from the shank (66), in order to position elements disrupting traffic or an ignition sensor at the shank rear (59) in the vicinity of the surface. <IMAGE>
