The mixture of waste and medium located in the chamber (15) between face and pressure shield (12) is conveyed away, in the course of which the excavation space can be partitioned off in a pressure-tight manner via the pressure shield (12) from the tunnel already driven. When the pressure shield (12) is partitioned off in a pressure-tight manner, the mixture having water and/or thixotropic liquid is mechanically transported into a storage space (16) for the compressed air, which storage space (16) is arranged behind the pressure shield (12), is connected to the chamber (15) via a first opening (19) and is separated in a pressure-tight manner from the tunnel (30).
