[origin: EP0301209A2] The single lever for manually controlling an electric wheelchair is of joystick type, incorporating a universal joint and a spring inside the hollow stem, returning it to the middle position. The base of the stem is shaped to form another universal joint to control the operation of two sliding plates (35) which operate two potentiometers included in the control system. Each plate has a slot (40,41) at the centre, the two slots crossing at right angles and each at an angle of 45 degrees to the sliding direction of the plates. At their intersection point is a flanged bush (43) inside which the lower universal joint element fits.
