[origin: EP0311764A1] The baler (1) for paper and similar fibre-containing and moisture-absorbing material comprises a press box (3) which can be filled from above and a press ram (6) which can be moved forward in said box from a withdrawn rest position by means of a drive and which possesses, behind a pressing plate (8) which essentially covers the cross-section of the press box (3), laterally concealed rollers (15, 17) for supporting the press ram (6) on roller conveyors (base 19) of the press box (3). To protect the rollers (15, 17) from the risk of blocking as a result of dusty material, which is compressed and hardens in the moist state, the baler (1) is designed in such a way that, of the rollers (15, 17), at least the rollers (15) which lie closest to the press plate are substantially enclosed on their circumferential side by a cover (25) of a smooth, water-rejecting plastic and/or metal, the cover (25) leaving only a narrow gap for movement with respect to the rollers (15, 17). Such a cover preferably has the basic form of a continuous ingot strip which possesses recesses for the rollers, but, moreover, projects laterally with respect to the rollers, in order to form a sliding block between the press ram (6) and the press box (3). <IMAGE>
