A deck-load barge (10) has a sheerleg crane (11) that is translatable over the deck whilst under loading, with winching units (25, 19) for the sheerleg support tackle (22) and load carrying tackle (16) in fixed positions on deck, and synchronised operation of the winching units to enable the vertical position of the load to be controlled whilst the sheerleg is being translated over the deck.
