[origin: EP0318701A2] A method and an apparatus by means of which the worn surface of the lining (3) of a steel ladle (1) can be removed while remaining true to the original contour, in a uniform layer thickness. Tools (30) on flexible displaceable arms (27) are pressed against the inner circumference (4) of the lining. Under the action of a vibrator (32), these tools exert a hammer action on the surface layer of the lining (3). A mould is then lowered into the ladle (1) and the space remaining between the mould and the inner surface (4) from which material has been removed is filled with a loose refractory mass which combines with the old lining (39) to give a new monolithic lining. <IMAGE>
