In a vice, it is proposed that the moving jaw 16 can be adjusted by a first thread 26 of a spindle 28 and that this spindle 28 is received in a threaded nut 34 by way of a second thread 32. The threaded nut 34 is axially supported and drivingly connected to the threaded spindle 28 by an overload coupling 50. In addition, it is braked by a rotary brake 37. When the clamping force at the moving jaw 16 increases, the rotary brake 37 becomes operative and the overload coupling 50 inoperative, so that the second thread 32 is screwed relative to the threaded nut 34. The two threads 26 and 32 have the same direction of helix, but a different pitch. When the second thread 32 is screwed relative to the threaded nut 34, the pitch difference between the two threads 26 and 32 acts simply to increase the clamping force. <IMAGE>

Bei einem Schraubstock wird vorgeschlagen, daß die Laufbacke (16) durch ein erstes Gewinde (26) einer Spindel (28) verstellbar ist und daß diese Spindel (28) durch ein zweites Gewinde (32) in einer Gewindemutter (34) aufgenommen ist. Die Gewindemutter (34) ist axial abgestützt und durch eine Überlastkupplung (50) mit der Gewindespindel (28) auf Mitnahme verbunden. Ferner ist sie durch eine Drehbremse (37) abgebremst. Wenn die Spannkraft an der Laufbacke (16) steigt, so wird die Drehbremse (37) wirksam und die Überlastkupplung (50) unwirksam, so daß das zweite Gewinde (32) sich gegenüber der Gewindemutter (34) verschraubt. Die beiden Gewinde (26) und (32) haben gleichen Steigsinn, jedoch unterschiedliche Steigung. Wenn das zweite Gewinde (32) gegenüber der Gewindemutter (34) verschraubt wird, so ist nur mehr die Steigungsdifferenz zwischen den beiden Gewinden (26) und (32) spannkrafterhöhend wirksam.
