[origin: WO8801209A1] A process for continuously casting slabs having a considerably greater width than thickness, especially steel slabs less than 80 mm thick. The molten mass is poured from a casting container (1) into a chill mould (3) having on the pouring-in side a cross-section that is larger in a central area than the desired casting format and similar thereto in its edges. In order to obtain a process and device that allow steel slabs less than 80 mm thick to be faultlessly produced with a surface finish of high quality, the cross-sectional form of the pouring-in side of the chill mould is maintained along its whole length and the casting shell of the central zone of the casting (7) that comes out of the chill mould is deformed by supporting and guiding means (8) arranged directly after the chill mould, so that the casting shell, after passing through the deforming section, lies on the plane of the slab surface of the edge area (11).
