[origin: EP0324159A1] A microcomputer, which may be accommodated in the passenger compartment of a motor vehicle, is used for controlling an internal combustion engine. If the output driver for the ignition coil and/or the injection valves are accommodated together with the microcomputer in one housing, this may result in both heat problems and problems of interference. For this reason the ignition output stage is shifted to the ignition coil, it being desirable, however, to connect the shifted output stage to the microcomputer control unit with as few leads as possible. The invention relates to a dwell control with shifted ignition output stage, this ignition output stage being connected to the microcomputer by one control lead. According to the invention this control lead represents the sole connection between the shifted ignition output stage and the microcomputer and by appropriate methods is used bi-directionally as a control circuit. This improves both the freedom from interference and the economy of the system. <IMAGE>
