Abstract (en)

[origin: WO8801898A1] A fluid filter consists of a stack of discs (24) which are formed from an air laid, nonwoven batt of randomly arrayed fibers. The batt includes a thermoplastic component to give the discs (24) a self-supporting stiffness when molded. Each of the discs (24) have radially extending contaminant collecting surfaces (30, 32) on the opposite sides thereof, and each have axially offset portions (38, 40) circumscribing the inner and outer diameters of the discs (24). Alternate discs (24) in the stack are inverted, so that the axially offset portions (38, 40) on the inner and outer circumferences of the discs (24) are brought into registration with one another. Accordingly, radially extending flow paths are defined between the discs to communicate fluid toward and away from the contaminant collecting surfaces. Ribs (42) are provided on the contaminant collecting surfaces (34, 36) to maintain separation of the discs (24) under dynamic flow conditions.
