Abstract (en)

[origin: EP0327064A2] In a process for producing powder-metallurgical articles, especially elongate articles such as rods, sections, tubes or the like, powder of metal and/or metal alloys of high hardness, especially tool steel powder or high-speed steel powder, is filled into a thin-walled capsule, the capsule is then sealed air-tight, heated and isostatically pressed to produce a blank which is then hot-formed, especially extruded, to give the end product. In a first alternative, the capsule sealed air-tight is first heated to a temperature of more than 1000 DEG C. After the capsule has been fully heated through, it is held for a prolonged period at an elevated temperature. The capsule is then slowly cooled for cold-isostatic pressing before the final forming. Alternatively, the capsule is first cold-isostatically pressed after the air-tight sealing. The pressed blank is then heated to a temperature of more than 1000 DEG C. After the pressed blank has been fully heated through, it is held for a prolonged period at an elevated temperature and is then, either immediately or after prior cooling, hot-formed, especially extruded.
