[origin: EP0330733A1] Security element in the form of a thread (1) or a ribbon for insertion into security documents such as banknotes, cheques, securities, credit and identity cards or the like, comprising characters, patterns, etc., which can be rendered visible by transparency and/or read by a machine. Said element consists of a translucent plastic film (2) covered by an opaque coating (3) and having recesses (4) shaped like the characters or patterns to be applied. Said element also comprises colouring and/or luminescent substances, in the regions coinciding with the recesses, which make it possible under suitable lighting conditions to distinguish the characters and/or patterns from the security document and from the opaque coating by means of contrasting colours.
