[origin: EP0330955A2] In order to preserve the glazing rolls (14) of a calender (10), the latter can be opened for without risk of damage to the paper web (P). The opening of the calender takes place on detection of a faulty area in the paper web or when the paper web is introduced into the calender. Tear damage to the paper web when the calender is opened is prevented by arranging that, during the opening movement, the glazing rolls together with the associated lead roll (22, 24) move over the same distance. <IMAGE>
