Abstract (en)

[origin: EP0331138A2] A printer, preferably a thermal printer, has a line-wide print head with a plurality of closely adjacent print elements. In order to obtain a high-contrast graduation of grey shades of a screen image, the invention provides that the odd and even numbered print elements each comprise a group capable of separate actuation. The two groups can be activated alternately at a separation of one screen line (RL). In this way, the distance to the next image point (BP) is twice as large as the unit separation distance (TA) of the print elements. During the advance of the paper sheet (3) by one screen line (RL), the print elements can be activated in four temporally consecutive sections with different energy inputs. By means of the individually selectable sections and their combinations, the heating elements can be excited in thirteen different energy stages. This allows image points (BP) from the size of a barely visible point to that of twice the area of a print element to be achieved. <IMAGE>
