Toy building blocks with a coupling element projecting at one end face can be connected to adjacent toy building blocks via corresponding openings. Spielbauelemente mit an einer Stirnseite abstehendem Verbindungszapfen können über entsprechende Öffnungen mit benachbarten Spielbauelementen verbunden werden. Zu diesem Zweck wird der Verbindungszapfen in eine Öffnung eingesetzt und um 90° verdreht. Um eine Verdrehsicherung im Bereich einer solchen Verbindung zu erhalten, wird an der Außenfläche, an welcher der Verbindungszapfen absteht, seitlich neben dem Verbindungszapfen wenigstens eine erhöhte Fläche ausgebildet, die an der Öffnung eines zu verbindenden benachbarten Spielbauelements einrasten kann.
