[origin: EP0334355A2] The lamp has a high illumination efficiency and very good colour properties and is distinguished by a compact construction together with good convergence properties of the radiation and immediate emission of luminous flux after switching on and can be designed in particular also for very low power levels. It is suitable for general lighting purposes but can also be used for vehicle headlamps and for lighting requirements in scientific and medical apparatus. Discharge takes place in xenon or krypton, the plasma of which is heated by high-power pulses of high repetition frequency and low pulse-duty factor until the recombination continuum distributed over the visible spectral range is being emitted with high intensity, the discharge in the lamp being maintained between the pulses by a holding current of low intensity. <IMAGE>
