[origin: EP0335716A1] In a piston and cylinder air compressor unloading of which is achieved by an unloader valve 7 connecting an additional volume (27) to the compressor clearance volume, a further valve (34,32) is provided in the cylinder head assembly which closes off the compressor delivery port (10) during unloading intervals whereby regenerative purging of an air dryer does not result in appreciable depletion of pressure which is required to be maintained in the extra volume (27).
