[origin: EP0335833A1] The invention relates to a method and apparatus for extending a cloth (2) in open width within a mercerising machine (1). Initially the cloth (2) is guided as a tight strand through various wet treatment operations. It is then introduced into a stenter (8), where it is brought to the desired width. Between the zone of tight strand guiding and the stenter (8) the cloth passes through a free zone (32). Moreover, the rate of advance of the cloth upstream of the free zone and the subsequent rate of advance provided by the stenter can be adjusted relative to one another in such a way that the cloth is conveyed at a speed which is higher than the speed of removal by the stenter. This ensures a loose transfer into the free zone, which improves the opening out of the cloth in the stenter.
