A glowplug (11) for use in combustion engines, in particular diesel engines, has in its glow element (15) an electric resistance member which consists partially of a round wire (19) and, in its part facing the bottom (16) of the glow element (15), of a flat material strip (20) which is designed in the form of a spiral drawn out in the longitudinal direction. This resistance heating element, which is arranged in an embedding mass (17) in the glow element, ensures particularly fast heating with a good service life. The flat material resistance element (20) is welded to the bottom (16) and can also consist of a band, the larger dimensions of which lie transversely to the axis (24). Eine Glühkerze (11) zur Verwendung in Brennkraftmaschinen, insbesondere Dieselmotoren, hat in ihrem Glühelement (15) einen elektrischen Widerstandskörper, der teilweise aus einem Runddraht (19) und in seinem dem Boden (16) des Glühelementes (15) zugewandten Teil, aus einem Flachmaterialstreifen (20) besteht, der in Form einer in Längsrichtung auseinandergezogenen Spirale ausgebildet ist. Dieses in einer Einbettmasse (17) in dem Glühelement angeordnete Widerstandsheizelement sorgt für eine besonders schnelle Aufheizung bei guter Lebensdauer. Das Flachmaterial-Widerstandselement (20) ist mit dem Boden (16) verschweißt und kann auch aus einem Band bestehen, dessen größere Abmessungen quer zur Achse (24) liegen. Das Widerstandselement kann konisch ausgebildet sein.
