In order to prevent overheating of the heat exchanger elements lying closer to the burner (1), these elements are designed and/or arranged with a lower heat absorption capacity than the elements lying further from the burner (1). To this end, the heat exchanger elements lying closer to the burner (1) can be formed for example from pipe trains (4) with a smooth surface and the pipe trains (6 or 10) lying further from the burner (1) with ribs (5 or 11).
