[origin: EP0340165A1] In the mechanical selvedge device (2) of a loom, the insertion needle (22) has a ramp (60) for the yarn end (4') and a catch recess (26) located behind it, the ramp serving for lifting the end (4') of the weft yarn. For the catching movement of the insertion needle, the latter only has to be moved towards the weft yarn (4'). The latter then slides over the ramp until it enters the catch recess (26). In this position, the weft yarn can be drawn into the fabric edge between the warp yarns (5). As a result of this design, the cycle of movement of the insertion needle during the catching and insertion operation can be very simple. <IMAGE>
