The electrolyser comprises single cells connected geometrically one behind the other and each consisting of two metallic partitions (2), (3) with a diaphragm (10) in between and with electrodes (8), (9) spaced on either side of the diaphragm and provided with perforations. As a protection against short circuiting and corrosion, spacing elements (13), (14) consisting of a nonmetallic refractory hard material are inserted in the gap formed between the electrode and the diaphragm. <IMAGE>

Bei einem Elektrolyseur mit geometrisch hintereinander geschalteten Einzelzellen, jeweils bestehend aus zwei metallischen Trennwänden (2),(3) mit einem dazwischen angeordneten Diaphragma (10) und auf beiden Seiten des Diaphragmas mit Abstand angebrachten, mit Durchbrechungen versehenen Elektroden (8),(9), sind zum Schutz gegen Kurzschluß und Korrosion in den von der Elektrode und dem Diaphragma gebildeten Zwischenraum aus einem nicht-metallischen hochschmelzenden Hartstoff bestehende Distanzelemente (13),(14) eingefügt.
