[origin: EP0342371A2] A method for the preparation of a thermal ink ribbon, in particular a thermal carbon ribbon, with a wax- and/or plastic-bonded melt-on ink is described. This method is characterised in that, on one side of the wax- and/or plastic-bonded melt-on ink, a thin layer of a polymer is formed by applying thereto a) the dispersion or solution of a film-forming polymer which is non-fusible during the thermal printing step and evaporating the solvent or dispersant or b) a monomer and/or prepolymer and then subjecting the latter to an in-situ polymerisation. The particular advantages of this thermal ink ribbon are that an expensive carrier film is no longer necessary and the heat transfer during the thermal printing step is promoted as compared with a thicker carrier film.
