[origin: EP0344732A1] Metal halide discharge lamps having a high light yield can be obtained with lamp fillings which contain sodium and gallium in a mol ratio above 1, particularly from 1 to 19 and especially from 2 to 8. In this arrangement, mixed halides of chlorine and iodine, bromine and iodine or chlorine, bromine and iodine are suitably used, the iodine content of which is not more than 85 At%, particularly between 50 and 80 At%. The illustrative embodiments contain information on lamp fillings which exhibit noble gas such as argon, mercury and thallium halide and sodium and gallium halide with a Na/Ga mol ratio around 3. <IMAGE>
