Die Erfindung betrifft eine Buchstütze, mit einem Auflageelement (2), das eine Buchauflagefläche (3) aufweist, und einer verstellbaren Tragstruktur für das Auflageelement. Erfindungsgemäß weist die Tragstruktur eine Seilaufhängung mit einem Tragseil (20) und einer Wickelvorrichtung (22) für das Tragseil auf. Weiterhin ist eine die Wickelvorrichtung im Aufwickelsinn andauernd kraftbeaufschlagende Antriebsvorrichtung vorgesehen und die Wickelvorrichtung ist mit einer Bremsvorrichtung verbunden, deren Bremskraft wenigstens etwas geringer ist als die Antriebskraft der Antriebsvorrichtung.
