Abstract (en)

[origin: EP0345915A1] A submersible linear pump (P) for pumping liquid sodium includes a stator having a central cylindrical duct (D) surrounded by coils (C) in slots interleaved with magnetic flux conducting elements (L), forming a continuous magnetic field conduction path along the stator. A cylindrical magnetic conducting core (K) is in the duct. Pump operation occurs by static windings (C) in the outer stator sequentially conveying toroidal fields from the pump inlet (524) to the pump outlet (526). The stator has many poles distributed along its length, each energized by a multi-phase supply (ABC). There are multiple slots per pole per phase. Each phase (e.g. A) has a number of windings in parallel on each pole (A1, A2, A3, A4) equal to or less than the number of slots per pole per phase. The slot sequence per pole per phase is chosen to equalize the variations in flux density of the sodium as it passes into the inlet (524) with little or no flux and acquires magnetic flux as it moves to the outlet (526). The parallel windings of each phase are placed in symmetrically permuted slots in successive poles to equalize phase angle shifts between the slots of each pole at each phase in each leg. Conventional high voltage series connection of all the poles is avoided. Coil voltages are reduced and insulating materials of lower dielectric rating can be used.
