Die Erfindung betrifft ein Verfahren zur Erzeugung eines Vakuums in Hohlkörpern (4) vorzugsweise aus metallischen Werkstoffen, insbesondere aus Stahl und sie ist dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß in den Hohlkörper (4) mit Wasserstoff beladenes Metallhydrid (7) eingebracht wird und beim Erwärmen des Hohlkörpers (4) verdrängtes Wasserstoffgas freigesetzt wird.
