[origin: EP0348384A2] A process and apparatus for producing metal oxides by irradiating metal salt or metal alkoxide solutions with microwaves at 1 to 140 GHz in which the solutions are irradiated in spray form, preferably produced by spraying into a reactor or spraying onto a horizontal endless belt. The powders produced in this way have large specific surface areas together with small particle sizes, and a homogenous distribution of the constituents even in the case of mixed oxides. The acids, alcohols and also the solvents bound to the metals are obtained in easily recoverable form and are advantageously reused. <IMAGE>
