Selon l'invention, on envoie sur les colonnes de l'écran, au cours du temps de ligne T, des signaux d'activation pendant un temps qui dépend du niveau de gris i du point image considéré et qui vaut (T/N). Nil avec 0<=i<=m<=N, les Nil formant une suite strictement croissante de i, de premier terme nul et de dernier terme inférieur ou égal à N. Les Nil sont choisis de façon à obtenir une répartition déterminée pour les intensités lumineuses des différents niveaux de gris. Application à la commande d'écrans matriciels à micropointes ou à cristaux liquides.
