[origin: EP0351596A2] There is presented a method for closing a workpiece holder for an automatic sewing machine, which ensures that the workpiece parts, once aligned, are no longer displaced during the clamping, and a workpiece holder by means of which this process can be carried out is provided. The closing of the workpiece holder is brought about by the fact that the closing movement results from a combined pivoting and lowering movement. The top plate of the workpiece holder is thereby lowered over a large surface on to the aligned workpiece resting on the bottom plate of the workpiece holder, so that a uniform clamping takes place immediately. <??>Advantageously, the workpiece holder is designed so that the closing of the workpiece holder can be executed automatically, thus additionally achieving a reduction in the run-through times. <IMAGE>
