[origin: EP0351741A1] In a press for manufacturing sheet metal preforms in several stages, the die cushions (10) are arranged in a frame. The frame forms a unit (6, 6') which can be detachably connected to the press frame (1) and which is selected from a number of interchangeable units (6, 6') whose die cushions are arranged at various average distances corresponding to the different steps of the stages between the tools. Sets of tools of different sizes capable of performing a range of operations can therefore be incorporated in the press.
