[origin: EP0354176A1] The folding of sheets of paper is carried out by three continuous folding belts (5, 6, 10) which are guided around rollers (12, 15). The latter are driven with alternating direction of rotation. As a result, the paper sheet (9) is folded in a folding gap (14). The driven intake roller pair (3) prevents the paper sheet being pushed back. The programmable electronic control circuit effects the forward and backward running of the folding belts (5, 6, 10) depending on the desired folding program. A signal about the length of the paper sheet output is supplied from upstream printers and is evaluated for the program of the folding machine. After the folding operation, the folded piece travels via a gate (18) to a cross-folder. This permits a particularly short design of the machine. <IMAGE>
